############## This file describes how to install and use the ############### ############# COatWork virtual machine (VM) on your computer ############### You already downloaded the file COatWork.zip -------- Installation ------------- 1. Extract (unzip) this file to your favorite location (mydirectory). You will need at least 5GB free disk space. 2. You will need a VMware Player which can be downloaded from http://www.vmware.com/download/player/player_reg.html (There, you have to specify your host-platform - either linux or windows.) (Note that your linux distribution might already provide a VMware player.) We also provide the VMware Player on the DVD. Windows: run: VMware-Player-2.5.3-185404.exe Suse Linux: type as root: rpm -Uhv VMware-Player-2.5.3-185404.i386.rpm Debian: type as root: sh VMware-Player-2.5.3-185404.i386.bundle Afterwards you should find the VMware Player in your system menu. 3. Install the VMware player. 4. Windows only: Create a new folder C:\temp (see below). 5. Start the VMware player and "Open" the virtual machine mydirectory/COatWork/openSuSE.vmx. You might be asked whether you have "moved" or "copied" the machine. YOU HAVE TO ANSWER "I moved it" ! Now a VM with a Suse Linux 11.1 should boot. Your user name within the VM is 'coatwork'. Your home folder is /home/coatwork and even the password is 'coatwork'. -------- Material ------------- In the virtual machine, we have already installed all the software you will need for the exercises. We also created some folders that can be used to store exercise material /home/coatwork/COatWork-Data and the slides of the lectures /home/coatwork/COatWork-Slides . -------- Shared Folder ------------- Once you have started the VM you should "Enable Shared Folders" in the menu of the VMware player. If you want to exchange data between your VM and your computer you can use the folder in ~coatwork/shares . Windows: You will find the folder ~coatwork/shares/windows-shared which points to the C:\temp folder (see above). Linux : You will find the folder ~coatwork/shares/linux-shared which points to the /tmp folder of your installation. (In case ~coatwork/shares is empty try reboot the VM) Any file or folder that you will create in ~coatwork/shares/windows-shared (or ~coatwork/shares/linux-shared) on the VM will be accessible also on your computer in C:\temp (or /tmp) and vice versa ! If you encounter any problems (or if you use a Mac) let us know. -------- Some hints for Mac users ------------- We have not tested it but you can try one of the following: There is a trial version of VMware Fusion (if not already installed): http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/ It shoud also be possible to open VMware images using the Virtualbox player: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads Jakob Schelbert wrote: I just wanted to inform you that the Virtual Machine runs also on a Mac with Parallels 4. You can import the image and then run the yast2 configuration to get the graphical system working.
